Vagueness in Language
Hey everyone, I wanted to ask what you guys thought about the extent of vagueness in language. In what contexts might ambiguity either impede knowledge or contribute to its acquisition? Does the balance between precision and vagueness alter from one area of knowledge to another.
I think that the usage of vagueness and ambiguity in our everyday lives plays a huge role as it allows humans to create suspense, mystery, excitement or any other emotion depending on what context they are speaking in. Further, ambiguity in language can play a vital part when it comes to every day life; for instance, politicians and lawyers do not always want to directly refer to a matter or point of view, thus they may utilize the power of ambiguity in language to try and seem either more professional, or to cushion any flaws that their argument may have. Furthermore, ambiguity in language can also make criticisms seem less harsh, and as a result, people feel more courageous when wanting to give constructive criticism to their peers because they know that they don't have to be as direct and forward in harsh terms about their mistakes.
